Officials: CIA drone targets al-Qaida's No. 2

(AP) ? A CIA drone strike Monday targeted al-Qaida's second in command, Abu Yahia al-Libi, in Pakistan, but it was unclear whether he was among those hit, U.S. officials said.

Fewer than five people were hit in two days of strikes in Pakistan during a period of a half-dozen strikes in less than two weeks, as the U.S. pushed ahead with the controversial drone program despite Pakistani demands to stop. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the classified drone program.

U.S. officials said they did not know yet whether al-Libi was among those killed, but said they were "optimistic."

Al-Libi would be the latest in the dozen-plus senior commanders removed in the clandestine U.S. war against al-Qaida since Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden last year.

The White House maintains a list of terrorist targets to be killed or captured, compiled by the military and the CIA and ultimately approved by the president.

The State Department's Rewards for Justice program had set a $1 million reward for information leading to the Libyan-born fugitive, who had filmed numerous propaganda videos urging attacks on U.S. targets after he escaped a prison at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan in 2005.

Al-Libi took the second-in-command spot when Egyptian-born Ayman al-Zawahri took charge of al-Qaida after bin Laden's death. As al-Qaida's de facto general manager, al-Libi oversaw the group's day-to-day operations in Pakistan's tribal areas and managed outreach to al-Qaida's regional affiliates.

"This is one of the more prominent names" among the targets of drone strikes in Pakistan, which helps bolsters the CIA's push to continue the drone program despite the continued political resistance from Pakistan and collateral damage, added former CIA officer Paul Pillar.

Al-Libi's death would be "another reason not to accept Pakistan's demand for an end to drone wars," added Brookings Institute's Bruce Riedel, a former CIA officer and adviser to the White House on Afghanistan and Pakistan policy.

Stake Your Claim! ? Proven Strategies For Investing That Really Work!

by Kathleen Burch

It is possible to make substantial amounts of money buying stocks. However, the only way you can be successful at it is if you know what you are doing. The piece that follows includes great tips for maximizing stock market investments.

If you wish to pay lower fees for investing, considering trading online. There are many online firms that trade stocks and are much cheaper than a regular brokerage firm. Remember to shop around online in order to find great deals. TradeKing and Fidelity are great choices, too.

Don?t overlook international investments when seeking to expand your portfolio. Although you might only be comfortable investing in U.S.-based companies, many international companies make great investments that can help you reap the benefits of the global economy. If you are hesitant to broaden your stock horizons all on your own, you can always venture into a safer international mutual fund.

Stocks that pay out dividends are a great investment tool. This way, even if your stock declines, you still get a dividend to offset part of the loss on the stock. If the stock?s value rises, your dividends are icing on the cake. They can also provide you with a periodic income.

Long-term investments will pay off better than get rich quick ideas. The stock market is extremely volatile, and if you think short-term, you will probably end up losing money. By choosing a long-term investment, you will be prepared to weather the ups and downs, and possibly some losses, but in the end you should be successful.

Make your first investments with the bigger, more familiar companies. In a lot of cases, investing in large companies is relatively safe and helps you build a solid portfolio. Later, you can expand your portfolio to include stocks of smaller companies. Small companies provide the high risk high reward scenario.

When investing in the stock market, try to also pay attention to other investment opportunities that can make you money. Other excellent investments include art, mutual funds, bonds and real estate. If you have enough money to do so, try diversified investing to protect your wealth.

Don?t be closed minded when you are considering the price of stocks you are purchasing. If you pay a lot for a stock versus what it?s worth, your returns will be reduced. While this week a stock might look overpriced, next week, it might end up a real deal.

Now that you?ve come to the end of this article, are you still interested in investing in the market? If you think yes in your head, then you are ready to start learning how! Remember the information above and you will be buying and selling stocks in no time, without emptying the contents of your bank account.

Celtics Defeat Heat, 101-91: Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo Lead Boston To Game 3 Win (VIDEO)

BOSTON -- Kevin Garnett was fouled underneath the basket and went hard to the court. He remained on his back, motionless, as his teammates rushed over to check on him and offer a hand.

The Boston Celtics center ignored them, instead gingerly rolling over onto his stomach before extending his arms to ease himself off the court. Down and up he went, pushing off the floor on his knuckles eight times for some postseason pushups.

For the first time in the Eastern Conference finals, Boston was having fun with the Miami Heat.

"I'm getting crap about my form, but I want people to know it's because it was on my knuckles," Garnett joked in the locker room after leading Boston to a 101-91 victory over the Heat that cut Miami's lead in the best-of-seven series to 2-1. "That's old school. My uncle taught me to do pushups on my knuckles. That's some Army-Navy stuff."

Garnett had 24 points and 11 rebounds, Paul Pierce scored 23 points and Rajon Rondo had 21 points with 10 assists to help the Celtics avoid falling into a 3-0 hole in the series after losing the first two games in Miami.

Game 4 is Sunday night in Boston.

"They defended their home court," Rondo said. "In a couple of days, we'll do the same."

LeBron James scored 34 points, but the NBA MVP and the rest of the Heat went cold during a 7-minute stretch at the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second, when Boston outscored them 15-0 to turn a six-point deficit into a nine-point lead.

The Celtics extended it to 24 points early in the fourth quarter before Miami came back and cut it to 95-87 with help from three 3-pointers by Mike Miller. But James had a turnover and missed a 3-pointer in the last 2 minutes to squelch the Heat's hope of a comeback.

"You're trying to fight back the whole time," said James, who scored 16 points in the first quarter but just four with one rebound and one assist in the fourth. "We made a run but it was too much."

Miami still trailed by eight points with the ball when Dwyane Wade missed and Ray Allen grabbed the rebound, sending Rondo on a fast break that made it a 99-89 with 99 seconds to play. James threw the ball away underneath, then missed a 3-point attempt the next time down ? one of only four shots he took in the fourth quarter.

Pierce found Garnett for a long jumper at the other end, and the teams began emptying their benches.

Coming off his 44-point effort in the Game 2 loss in Miami, in which he played every second of regulation and overtime, Rondo was 9 for 16 from the field and grabbed six rebounds. Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he had little to tell Rondo on the day off.

"I'm like a pitcher throwing a no-hitter: you stay away from that joker," Rivers said. "The guy scored 44 points, what can I possibly tell him?"

Mostly: Get the ball to Garnett.

Many of Garnett's baskets were lobbed to him under the rim. Boston outscored Miami 58-46 on points in the paint, and Garnett was the reason why.

"He (Rivers) kept preaching to just throw it up to him," Rondo said. "They went small, and no one can jump as high as Kevin. He stood up to the rim, and he went up and got most of them."

Marquis Daniels led the Boston bench with nine points and five rebounds in 18 minutes.

Wade scored 18 points and Mario Chalmers had 14 points and six assists for Miami. Shane Battier was scoreless, missing all six shots, and Ronny Turiaf had three points while tangling with Garnett under the basket for much of the game.

The Celtics center, who has appeared rejuvenated during these playoffs at the age of 36, got called for another technical foul for a violent elbow but otherwise seemed to be enjoying himself. While waiting to inbound the ball in the second quarter, he high-fived a young child sitting courtside in a No. 5 Celtics jersey.

At the other end, after behind slammed hard to the court by Udonis Haslem, he did a series of crowd-pleasing pushups.

"K.G. plays a lot of mental games with himself ? and with others," Celtics guard Keyon Dooling said. "K.G. is a very focused individual and he loves these kind of moments."

Wade was 9 for 20 from the field and did not shoot a free throw in the game. James, who shot 24 free throws in Game 2, making 18, was 1 for 5 from the line.

James hit seven of his first nine shots, before making one of the next six. That helped Boston score the last eight points of the first quarter and the first seven of the second to turn a six-point deficit into a nine-point lead. Much of it came with Dooling and Daniels on the court for Boston.

Notes: During the first timeout, the Celtics acknowledged Boston Globe columnist Bob Ryan, who is retiring this summer. GM Danny Ainge was one of the first to stand and applaud. ... K.C. Jones, who was celebrating his 80th birthday, and fellow Celtic great John Havlicek were in the crowd. ... Miami was 10 for 20 from the free throw line.

Tap water comes from underground sources and is safe to drink. However, I find the water rather salty so I prefer filtered water for drinking (we get 5 gallons for 25 pesos and this usually lasts us a week); boiled tap water is okay for coffee or tea, although boiling leaves plenty of sedimentation (lime probably) in the kettle and water pot.

Rice comes in several varieties such as bukid rice, red rice, pink rice, panda rice, camia rice, etc. Our preference has been camia rice. However, white rice is not really very healthy so we?re trying to look at alternatives. Bukid rice and red rice are healthier choices.

?

What I do is mix red rice, pink rice and white rice (we consume about 3 kilos of rice (that?s roughly 102-106 pesos) every 5-6 days with Penny and Vic eating lunch with us almost every day). Malagkit (sticky rice) is also available. When we get a blender/osterizer, I would like to make some sticky rice powder to mix in with soup. There?s also mais rice available in the market.

Beautiful heart of the saba banana tree.

Beautiful heart of the saba banana tree. The heart can also be cooked and eaten.

This is milled maize (or corn) that resembles couscous when cooked. In Tagbilaran City?s Island City Mall and BQ Mall supermarkets, whole wheat flour is available in packs of 500 grams and 1 kilo, as well as cracked wheat. I have been getting more of these to bake bread and more recently to make pita bread as substitute for rice. I?ve also used cracked wheat for salad.

Flower of wild squash plant.

Flower of one of the wild squash plants growing in the garden.

Noodle is also our usual substitute for rice. There?s fresh miki available in the market. The packed ones (250 grams for 10 pesos) are better than the ones sold by weight as these are more hygienic and less salty. My other favorite is a type of dry noodle called pancit canton. The 250 grams pack costs 30 pesos at Tagbilaran City supermarkets in Island City Mall (ICM), Alturas or BQ Mall. The tastiest pancit canton noodles come from CITIFOOD Industries in Cebu.

Market Day in Baclayon.

Market Day in Baclayon.

Vegetables and eggs are plentiful and easily available at the market, and a few from our garden (kangkong, kamote tops, alugbati, gabi, atsal (native bell peppers), chilies, green papaya, malunggay; we also occasionally have native eggs which are smaller (45 grams) than supermarket eggs (55 grams)). Typical native vegetables are squash, eggplants, okra, sitao (stringbeans), ampalaya (bitter gourd), white radish, tomatoes, onions, spring onions, leeks, and root crops kamote (sweet potato), gabi, ubi, kamoteng kahoy (cassava).

Fresh cacao from our neighbor Charing.

Every Sunday, Gundat slaughters a pig so fresh pork is available. At the market, pork and chicken meat are available in the morning of market day (Wednesday), also often in the afternoon before market day. Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning you might also find chicken and pork.

Flying fish.

One of the cheapest fish in town - the so-called "Flying Fish."

Fish (and sometimes squid and less frequently shrimps) is available in the early morning and in the late afternoon everyday. On a good day, there?s also plenty of fresh seaweeds often eaten as salad. However, they have a variety of seaweed here that I?m not particularly fond of. They are thinner with numerous nodes. The varieties I like come from Ilocos Sur in Luzon island, and these are tiny grape-like seaweeds and the other are thicker round stems with a felt-like texture. Unfortunately, I can?t find these in Bohol.

Newly harvested turmeric.

Newly harvested turmeric.

Some seafood surprises are also be available at the market but more rarely: sea urchin, swordfish, stingray, eels. Prawns, lobsters, crabs and larger varieties of squid are better found in Tagbilaran City.

Unfortunately, fish and seafood tend to be expensive in Baclayon because of the practices of middlemen/fishmongers.

96% First Position

All Critics (46) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (44) | Rotten (2)

A number of the performances are plain stunning - Aran and Joan, in particular, seem born to move - and in many ways watching the movie is like watching a sporting event; there are winners and losers and favorites to cheer on.

It's an intense journey, and Kargman captures it all, down to the dancers' bloodied and bruised feet.

Yes, it is possible to create a gripping documentary about the ballet world without resorting to "Black Swan" melodramatics.

Because its subjects are so driven and so talented, "First Position," which is about ballet, is more gripping than the norm.

It's in the quick audience-reaction shots of the young dancers' exultant parents and cringing private instructors that the movie finds its most nakedly human moments.

The film shows the grueling work it takes for young dancers like Zamora to look effortless on stage, and First Position shows teachers who range from supportive to borderline abusive.

It's a wealth of material at odds with a scant running time and shallow focus.

When it's over, you won't remember so much about who won and who lost. Instead, what remains is the expression on a young dancer's face, reflected in a mirror: showing the joy of being in love with what you do.

What we experience is the overwhelming thrill of the competition and the true agony of defeat.

It could very well compete for Best Documentary at next year's Academy Awards.

For someone (like me) who has never been to a ballet, the talent of these teens and tweens is a revelation.

It's 'Spartacus' en pointe.

Inspiring documentary about hardworking young dancers.

Almost loses its sense of good taste entirely in the final act, straining to build suspense and shape heroes. The bias hangs a little ugly in an otherwise passable, somewhat enlightening effort.

The cookie cutter format Kargman uses in presenting her subjects may be unoriginal but a safe way to introduce the filmmaker to her new audience.

Child ballet dancer and former journalist Bess Kargman brings a dancer's passion and insight to her directorial debut, illuminating the addictive magic and fierce demands of a ballet dancer's life.

Really, all of the dancers' evident passion for their art is, well, spellbinding.

These kids are proud of their tights.

Kargman follows the pre-established pattern of documentaries following competitions from crosswords to spelling bees, but the format works and she's found six kids ranging in age from 9 to 16 who are truly involving.
