Texas Monthly asks the big question: Can Castros, Davis, Dems turn Texas?

The darlings of the Texas Democratic Party ? Mayor Juli?n Castro, U.S. Rep. Joaqu?n Castro and state Sen. Wendy Davis ? appear on the cover of the August edition of Texas Monthly Magazine as part of a story questioning whether the Lone Star State really can return to its bygone shade of blue.

Receiving special billing are the ?rogue red and apple green? Mizuno Wave Rider running shoes Davis donned during her 11-hour filibuster that made her a household name overnight last month.

Under the headline, ?The Life and Death (and Life?) of the Party? the lengthy cover story was penned by Robert Draper, a contributor to both Texas Monthly and the New York Times Magazine. The piece covers a lot of territory, reaching back decades to recount Texas' slog of moving from a Democratic stronghold to reliably red.

Draper asks the question: ?Can Wendy Davis, the Castro brothers, and Team Obama's vaunted field operation return their party to power? And if they can't, can anyone??

The Castros maintain they have no designs on statewide office, now. Davis and the Democratic effort in Texas have posted attention-getting numbers in campaign and expenditure reports this week.

Davis, who plans fund-raising stops in Washington, D.C., next week, has raised nearly $1 million post-filibuster. Battleground Texas, a Democratic engine created to flip Texas to blue, reported raising more than $1 million since its debut in February.

Republicans are winning the numbers game with solid majorities in the House, Senate and a firm grip on all statewide offices. Just-announced Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott in particular is way ahead in fund-raisiing. Abbott reported a campaign account of $18 million in January and added another $4 million in the July 15 report.

For fans of the Castro brothers, whose national profiles hit fever pitch last year when the elder twin (Juli?n) presented the keynote address on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, the most exciting element of the piece will be the photography. On the cover, the fairly serious-looking trio stands together ? Davis flanked on either side by a Castro twin.

Other photos show a more jovial crew, including one shot wherein Davis has her hand on Juli?n's back. In another, the brothers have ditched their suit jackets and done their best to add some years to their 38-year-old faces.

Juli?n says unequivocally in the piece ? as he has a number of times already in the Express-News ? that he has no intention to seek the governor's mansion in 2014.

The story opaquely implies that Joaqu?n could challenge Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018 and says that the state senator from Fort Worth is the politician most likely to take on the risk for an unlikely gubernatorial win.

Valencia College president receives small raise

Valencia College trustees today gave the school's president a small raise ? even though he asked multiple times during the meeting that his pay remain the same.

Trustees said President Sandy Shugart, who has not accepted a salary increase in several years, deserved at least the same increase offered to other employees. Full-time faculty and all staff members were given raises averaging 1.85 percent for the 2013-14 fiscal year.

Shugart's base salary will increase by about $5,400 to $298,466.

"I think the college has benefited enormously from his performance," said Lew Oliver, vice chairman of the board of trustees.

Oliver was the first trustee to say Shugart deserved more pay, and his colleagues agreed. Last year, Oliver also had protested Shugart's opposition to a raise.

Earlier Tuesday, trustees had praised Shugart during a discussion about his annual performance evaluation. He was rated "excellent" in all areas.

Shugart thanked the board for the additional money, but said he plans to donate it back to the college.

"I appreciate the thought," he said.

For example, music piracy has fallen from 1.2 billion songs in 2008 to 210 million last year. About 60 million movies and TV shows were pirated last year, compared to 125 million and 135 million five years ago. In short, access to paid content, whether via streaming or a la carte services, is slowly whittling away the impetus to pirate.

CSN: Sandoval lost weight to avoid benching

MESA, Ariz. ? Pablo Sandoval?s bat looked crisp as he collected three hits in his first four exhibition at-bats. But those weren?t the numbers that Giants manager Bruce Bochy wanted to see in the first weekend of games here.

Late last week, Bochy told Sandoval he would bench him if the Panda didn?t tip the scales at a certain weight by Saturday?s Cactus League opener.

?To his credit, he did,? Bochy said. ?Although to be honest, I?m not sure how.?

Maybe Sandoval locked himself in a sauna and cranked up the coals. However he did it, it came as a surprise to Bochy, who originally did not list Sandoval among his scheduled regulars on Saturday.

Instead, Sandoval is the only position player to start both of the Giants? exhibition games in the field.

?I talked to him (on Saturday) and he wants to play,? Bochy said. ?He comes in and does his early work. To play five innings, it helps with his conditioning.?

Sandoval just got done playing in the Venezuelan league playoffs three weeks ago, so he?s in better ?baseball shape? than most of his teammates. He also wants to make sure he?s ready when he leaves for the World Baseball Classic next week.

Although Bochy wouldn?t divulge any specific numbers, it?s believed that Sandoval is heavier than at any time since the end of the 2010 season, when his weight problem contributed to losing his job in the postseason. It was a wakeup call that compelled him to reshape his body that winter.

Sandoval might not be in the same condition he was when he reported in 2011, but Bochy didn?t describe him as if he?s in need of another wakeup call.

?He?s doing what I asked,? Bochy said.

Even though Matt Cain threw a lot of pitches in the first inning, Bochy said he would have sent his opening-day starter back out there if not for the line drive off the side of his right knee.

?We were a little concerned the knee might start swelling,? Bochy said. ?We?re being a little cautious with him. It?s a long spring.?

Everyone knows what kind of an arm Nate Schierholtz has in right field. Well, outfield prospect Francisco Peguero?s arm is even better, by reputation.

Peguero showed off that arm during infield drills. And like any quick-draw artist, he showed he?s not afraid of the next gun.

When Peguero hit a looping drive down the right field line in Sunday?s 4-3 loss to the Cubs, he didn?t hesitate while rounding first base. Peguero was able to hustle a double out of it.

Not even Schierholtz, the right fielder, could throw him out.

A cold wind chapped everyone?s skin all day, and it was no coincidence that the Giants and Cubs both decided to conduct pop-up drills for the first time this spring. The wind is known to blow at AT&T Park and Wrigley Field, after all.

When the game began, outfield prospect Gary Brown made two especially impressive catches. He stayed with the gusting wind and covered a lot of ground while making one catch in right-center. Then he sprinted straight back and didn?t get turned around while hauling in another deep drive.

?He?s a gifted outfielder with good speed and he gets good reads on the ball,? Bochy said. ?It?s impressive. He?s a young guy who doesn?t know this outfield, the wind and the sun here, and he made all the plays.?

Actually, Brown played at HoHoKam Park plenty of times in the Arizona Fall League and he knew ?that Mesa is the absolute worst with the wind and sun breaking through the clouds.?

Told of Bochy?s comment, Brown?s eyes got wide.

?Maybe it?d be better if you forget what I just told you,? he said, smiling.

Angel Villalona got his first start in a Giants uniform and collected his first hit, a single to left field off Kyuji Fujikawa. Villalona likely will be among the first rounds of cuts, and while you have to wonder whether the Giants are giving him a serious look, he?s still just 22 years old. He?s a prospect.

Bob Brenly?s kid, Michael, is in Cubs camp and played in Sunday?s game. He?s got some size on the old man.

Dan Runzler continues to look very good. I also like what I see from Kensuke Tanaka thus far, but I think it?ll be hard for him to make the team over Wilson Valdez or Tony Abreu if he can?t play shortstop.

The ol? Twitter stream filled up with NASCAR references as the Daytona 500 reached its conclusion, and as I watched the Giants and Cubs, a thought occurred to me: The goal of NASCAR and baseball is the same ? make as many left turns as you can, as quickly as possible.

The talented Billy Byler, beat reporter who covers the Giants? A-ball affiliate in Augusta, added one more thought: ?And draft to your advantage.?

NetSuite OpenAir Mobile Comes to Android Devices

The platform allows Android OS users to update and submit time and expense reports for projects on their smartphones and tablet devices.

Cloud-based enterprise resource management (ERP) and financials software specialist NetSuite announced the availability of its OpenAir Mobile time tracking and expenses management platform for Google's Android operating system. OpenAir Mobile for Android includes a calendar to track and manage time, access to OpenAir time sheets and expense reports using the Android user interface and instantaneous synchronization with OpenAir accounts to use up-to-date customer, project and task data. "Services professionals increasingly rely on smartphones and tablets while on the road or anytime they need to access an OpenAir account," Ed Marshall, NetSuite Service Vertical general manager, said in a statement. "This new mobile app for Android puts the power of the cloud in the palm of their hand to perform more efficiently and speed time and expense reporting and approvals." The platform allows users to update and submit time and expense reports for projects. Along with entering receipt data, the app lets professionals in IT services, consulting, digital marketing and advertising, as well as media and publishing to take a photo of an expense receipt with their Android device, attach it to a record and synchronize the information with the organization's back-end NetSuite OpenAir PSA account. As an example, services organizations that bill clients based on specific time and expense reports could accelerate processes and cash flow when consultants are able to enter time and expense data through a smartphone or tablet. The application is free and only requires a customer's OpenAir credentials to sync with their account. Although an application that could run on Apple's iOS platform was a near-necessary development half a decade ago, application developers are increasingly turning to Android app development as the platform has skyrocketed in popularity. The analyst firm IDC estimates that Android commanded 75 percent of the worldwide smartphone market in the third quarter of 2012, about five times greater than the Apple iOS for the iPhone. In addition, Android's year-over-year growth rate of 91.5 percent for the 12 months ending on Sept. 30, 2012, was nearly double the 46.4 percent growth rate of the smartphone market at large, according to IDC. In the tablet market, the Android platform powered more than 44 percent of tablet shipments as of Q3 2012, second only to the Apple iOS on the iPad, which claimed a market share of 55 percent. Despite maintaining its lead for 10 straight quarters, competition from tablets powered by Android continued to eat away at Apple's success. Nearly 14 percent share was given up in the quarter to several benefactors, including Amazon, Google and Samsung.

George W. Bush's email hacked

Former president George H.W. Bush was the victim of a computer hacker who gained access to confidential emails and other electronic correspondence between members of the Bush family and friends, the U.S. Secret Service confirmed to ABC News.

Authorities have begun an investigation into the incident, a spokesman for Bush told ABC News. The spokesman could not confirm the content of the emails that were hacked.

"The Secret Service is investigating this matter," said Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan.

The unidentified hacker claims to have gained access to three years of personal emails dating back to 2009. The hacker has posted several of the personal photos online, including one of the elder Bush in the hospital.

The hacked material also includes telephone numbers, home addresses for dozens of Bush family members, including both former presidents. It also includes the security code for George W. Bush's home in Dallas.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Baltimore Ravens' victory over the San Francisco 49ers has set a record for highest overnight ratings in Super Bowl history, the Nielsen company reported Monday.

Nielsen reported the game scored a 48.1 rating and 71 share in its select measurement of big cities. That's 1 percent over a similar measurement in last year's game.

For three years in a row, the Super Bowl has set a new record for most-watched event in U.S. television history. Nielsen is expected to have an estimate of how many people watched the game later on Monday.

One ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share means that 71 percent of TVs that were on at the time were tuned to the Super Bowl.

At CBS' request, that ratings figure did not include a 30-minute period when there was a partial power outage in the Superdome. During that period, the metered market rating was 46.5, nearly two full points behind the 45-minute period directly before it.

The network also drew criticism by the Parents Television Council for not moving quickly enough to edit out a profanity said by Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco shortly after the game. Flacco was caught by microphones describing his team's victory as "f------ awesome."

The game also illustrated the explosive growth of second screen activity. The company Trendrr TV, which tracks activity on Twitter, Facebook and other social networks, estimated there were 47.7 million social media posts during the game. That compares to 17 million during the 2012 Super Bowl and 3 million the year before that.

Reports: sled crash kills 6 on Italian ski slope

ROME (AP) ? Italian news reports say a motorized sled making a night run down an Italian ski slope slammed into a fence and flipped over into a ditch, killing six tourists and severely injuring two others aboard.

RAI state radio reported early Saturday that the sled's occupants were Russian tourists. The crash occurred on an unlit slope late Friday on Mount Cermis in northeast Italy. Victims' names were not immediately available. Cause of the crash was under investigation.

In 1998, a U.S. Marine jet, flying low on a training run from a nearby air base, accidently sliced a ski gondola's cable on Mount Cermis, sending the cable car crashing to the ground and claiming 20 lives.
