Tango Pictures, a new production company that?s home to producers Andrew Lazar, Christina Lurie, and Steven Shainberg, has made a big splash with their first acquisition: they?ve landed the rights to Ben H. Winters? horror novel Bedbugs.
Deadline has the inside scoop on the sale, and reports that the bestselling novel will feature an adapted screenplay written by beloved horror filmmaker Ti West. West, best known for fright flicks like The?House of the Devil and The Innkeepers, will attempt to bring the novel?s finely tuned sense of menace to the big screen.
The novel?s publisher, Quirk Books (who will receive an executive producer credit on the finished film), says the novel felt like a perfect fit for West. ?Reading Bedbugs?as a manuscript felt like the literary equivalent of a Ti West horror movie?a slow-burning supernatural story with fully realized characters, light on gore but heavy on menace and dread.?
Here?s what West will be working with ? from the book?s official description:
FOR RENT: Top two floors of beautifully renovated brownstone, 1300 sq. ft., 2BR 2BA, eat-in kitchen, one block to parks and playgrounds. No broker?s fee.
Susan and Alex Wendt have found their dream apartment.
Sure, the landlady is a little eccentric. And the elderly handyman drops some cryptic remarks about the basement. But the rent is so low, it?s too good to pass up.
Big mistake. Susan soon discovers that her new home is crawling with bedbugs . . . or is it? She awakens every morning with fresh bites, but neither Alex nor their daughter Emma has a single welt. An exterminator searches the property and turns up nothing. The landlady insists her building is clean. Susan fears she?s going mad?until a more sinister explanation presents itself: she may literally be confronting the bedbug problem from Hell.
No word yet on who might direct Bedbugs, but since they?ve already got a great filmmaker writing the script, perhaps Tango Pictures should ask West if he?d like to direct it as well. Sounds like a project that fits his style.?
