Halloween is just the beginning of holiday indulging. With all the meal planning, stressful schedules, house guests, gift buying, and cramming in visits to relatives, it?s no wonder that eating seems like an easy escape. However, once the New Year arrives, you won?t be able to escape the fact your clothing is a little too tight for comfort. In addition to watching what you eat and trying to rein in emotionally-charged binges, try these five sneaky ways to eat less this holiday season.
1. Eat a salad
If you fill up your stomach with low-calorie healthy foods, you?ll be less likely to stuff yourself with high-calorie fare. Keep fresh vegetables and leafy greens on hand and make a salad for lunch and dinner either as a meal (be sure to add nuts, tofu or another protein to keep it balanced and keep you satisfies) or as a starter.
2. Hold on to your water bottle
Staying hydrated will help curb cravings and give your hands and mouth something low-calorie to do when stress starts urging you to get a sweet, carby oral fixation. Add lemon wedges, cucumber slices, or halved cherries to give your water an enticing flavor which will encourage you to drink up.
3. Keep your hands full
When you?re out shopping, hang on to your bags and take the challenge to hold on to them until you?re finished with your gift list. Not only will this give your arms a workout, it will keep you less tempted to scurry to the food court.
4. Chew gum
The act of chewing can be relaxing and if you chew sugarless gum, you?ll be relaxing nearly calorie-free.
5. Go to bed an hour earlier
Fatigue alone can send you to the kitchen to eat even if you?re not physically hungry. Making sleep a priority will help you manage stress better, feel more rested, and prevent late-night boredom eating.
