SMU Gourmet Club ? Archive ? Yomenya Goemon

Written by Kevin Ho, Photography by Tor Teck Chiat

First opened in 1976, this Japanese Spaghetti House now boasts over 2500 outlets in Japan. Yomenya has reinvented the method of consuming spaghetti (with chopsticks instead of forks), and yet stayed true to tradition by importing key ingredients like spaghetti, olive oil and cheese from Italy. The overall quality of their dishes is high and freshness can be tasted in every bite, due to their ?cook-on-order? philosophy. In fact, this has brought its stores so much success that outlets have sprung up all over Singapore. Every plate of spaghetti is served al dente, yet its set meals are affordable and offer great value for money. Diners may choose from their Lunch A ($15.90) with regular-sized spaghetti, soup and salad, Lunch B ($16.90) with regular-sized spaghetti, soup, salad and soft drink or Lunch C ($18.90) which is essentially Lunch B with Dessert. Their salads are scrumptious too ? diners can choose from an array of typical salad greens, fruits and traditional Japanese pickles and vegetables like eggplant. Top that off with their savoury toppings and dressings to round off a bowl of tasty greens. Their impressive consistency with their dishes is probably something that has contributed to Yomenya Goemon?s great success with the office crowd, due to the fact that its store at the Marina Bay Link Mall is always thronging with white collar executives.

Most noteworthy of about 32 different pasta dishes are, in our opinion:

Mediterranean Tomato Cream Soup Spaghetti with Fresh Seafood ($14.50)

This dish appears to be a favourite amongst diners and it isn?t hard to see why ? it is a massive bowl of al dente spaghetti in a light tomato-based cream soup with delicious morsels of prawns, mussels, clams and scallops, topped with a dollop of sour cream. The soup base has a good balance of tasty tomato and rich cream. With the sour cream mixed in, it takes on a slight sour tinge yet is light and not cloying. The sauce also clings well to each strand of spaghetti, allowing one to fully savour the harmonious flavours of the soup. Each piece of seafood is a delight to eat due to its freshness .

Carbonara Meat Sauce with Onsen Egg ($13.50)

Lovers of rich, creamy pasta would certainly appreciate this dish, which comes with a thick, rich ragu, or tomato-based meat sauce, carbonara (cream sauce) topped with an Onsen egg which appears soft-boiled yet solid enough to sit pretty on top of the spaghetti. The ragu has a satisfying, full-bodied meaty flavour which leaves diners wanting more with every bite. Some might say that the carbonara is rich and creamy, but may be too cloying for those feeling less ravenous, leaving them overly satiated.

And if the above-recommended do not suit your tastes, here?s another two dishes worthy of a try:

With tasty, tender roast duck, crunchy, crisp honshimeiji mushrooms and flavourful, melt-in-the-mouth welsh onions cooked aglio olio style (with chopped garlic and olive oil), Roast Duck, Honshimeiji and Welsh Onions?($14.50) sets the benchmark for aglio olio spaghetti.

Yakitori broiled chicken with Wafu Sauce ($14.00)?is a dish unique to Yomenya Goemon, comprising a bed of spaghetti, melt-in-the-mouth Welsh onions, broiled chicken chunks topped with sweet, slightly savoury wafu sauce reminiscent of teriyaki sauce and thick rectangular chunks of bacon topped with dried nori strips. Those who tend to be health-conscious would do well to choose this dish, although it could be said that calories were meant to be spent on mouthwatering food ? especially at Yomenya Goemon!
